The Orphanage: Solo Trailer Review 3
NAME OF FILM: The Orphanage YEAR RELEASED: 2013
GENRE OF TRAILER: Horror MARK AFTER VIEWING: 6.5/10
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TRAILER?
A boy and a woman enter into a cave. After entering the cave the little boy begins to see things and draw strange pictures. We then see children playing in the orphanage as strange things begin happening. The woman then sees a boy with a masked face and is being terrorised by him. The little boy then goes missing and the woman searches for him throughout the orphanage. She learns about the background of the orphanage, finding clues and at the end of the trailer we see the masked boy again standing behind the woman.
WHICH CLEVER OR INTERESTING ASPECTS DO YOU THINK YOU COULD INCLUDE IN YOUR OWN TRAILER? WHAT GENERIC FEATURES ARE FULFILLED WELL?
I like how in the beginning of the trailer we can see a very large and old looking building. This shows the setting for the film and that this is a very isolated place, an ideal and generic setting for a horror film. There is pathetic fallacy as we see a storm-like sky instantly presenting the genre and gloom of the film. Pathetic fallacy is a useful technique which i will use in my own trailer. One of my favorite things in the trailer is the costume of the little boy. The sack covering his face is disturbing and mysterious, i also like the fact that the main villain is played by a child. This is unnatural as children are often seen as innocent therefor making it more uncomfortable to watch. I would like to use high angle shots such as over the woman as she is sitting down which reflects her vulnerability. There is use of hand held camera when looking back at old footage from the orphanage this helps to make the events seem more realistic.
WHICH ASPECTS OF THE TRAILER DID YOU THINK WERE UNSUCCESSFUL, AND WOULD PUT OF IT'S TARGET AUDIENCE? HOW IS IT DISAPPOINTING?
I really disliked the voice over used throughout the trailer. It comes across as very cheesy and diverts away from the horror genre almost giving it a humorous side. Even though this may have been done because the film is originally in a different language it is not successful in promoting the film in the desired way. I would avoid adding any voice overs in my own trailer as i see it as being quite old fashioned and outdated especially for a modern horror. I also felt that within this trailer the narrative is quite hard to understand until you see the film. It is hard to know the relation of the woman and boy and why an Orphanage is the setting for this horror.

The Conjuring: Solo Trailer Review 2
NAME OF FILM: The Conjuring YEAR RELEASED: 2013
GENRE OF TRAILER: Horror MARK AFTER VIEWING: 7.5/10
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TRAILER?
We are presented with a couple who are ghost hunters who investigate paranormal events. They are apprached for help by a woman who's family is experiencing weird things in their farmhouse. There is a short quick montage of some of the events, then we are shown the couple exploring the house. There is then collison cutting from quiet to loud with a jump scare and the quick montage happens again of unnatural occurances in the house with a final jumpscare at the end while the woman in looking into the mirror and a face appears behind it.
WHICH CLEVER OR INTERESTING ASPECTS DO YOU THINK YOU COULD INCLUDE IN YOUR OWN TRAILER? WHAT GENERIC FEATURES ARE FULFILLED WELL?
I enjoyed the generic establishing scene which then built into a climax of disturbing the equilibirim which is typical for a horror genre narrative. The use of the torch in the beginning scene accompanied by the low key lighting adds an aspect of the unknown and is an effective technique i would try to use. With the black and white flash back images this historical context adds to the narrative and gives the trailer more depth. This is an interesting idea that i would also look into for my own trailer. When we are shown shots outside of the farmhouse, pathetic fallacy has been used in order to represent the genre. The mist connotes a hounting and mysterious vibe. There is a low angle shot looking up towards the farmhouse. This suggests that whatever is within the house is very powerful and something to be aware of. Angles such as this conote powerful meanings and so i would use these within my own trailer. Restricted Narration can be seen as we seen a womans feet hovering behind a man suggesting to us that she has been hung. This is a clever technique as it makes the audience imagine about what is off screen, i would definantly like to replicate this in my trailer.
WHICH ASPECTS OF THE TRAILER DID YOU THINK WERE UNSUCCESSFUL, AND WOULD PUT OF IT'S TARGET AUDIENCE? HOW IS IT DISAPPOINTING?
I feel that this trailer gave away too much of the storyline. This is a problem as it makes an audience feel like they already know what happens in the film and they will not anticipate to see anymore if they decide to go and watch it. This may have happened because the trailer is rather long in length and spend much of its time establishing the story. I would like to avoid this in my own trailer as i would not want the audience to become bored.

Final 2nd Year Trailer (with notes)
Lullaby
Annotations
Below are the
annotations you can see in the video for Lullaby.
We used these to
analyse and evaluate our final product.
17 secs
The low angle of the
camera gives my character power over Caitie
32 secs
The close up of
Caitie clearly expresses her deep emotion at this troubling moment.
39 secs
Low key lighting
creates are eerie and unsettling atmosphere.
41 secs
The high angle
connotes Caitie is weak and vulnerable
44 secs
Restricted narration
is used here to force the viewer to imagine more violence than what they see on
screen. It’s reminiscent of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with the scene
of Kurt’s body being cut up off screen.
56 secs
Handheld camera adds
to the sense of realism
1.02 min
Flickering lights and
low key lighting unsettle the viewer more and contrast with the bright “high
key” lighting before this scene.
1.05 min
Caitie’s make-up adds
to the eerie feel.
1.08 min
Editing skills are
important here, and also shows evidence of shot-reverse-shot.
1.12 min
The shot shows
Caitie’s desire for revenge but also links to her desire to regain her child,
who was stolen by Joe earlier in the narrative.
1.15 min
The low key lighting
here is especially indicative of death.

WHICH CLEVER OR INTERESTING ASPECTS DO YOU THINK YOU COULD INCLUDE IN YOUR OWN TRAILER? WHAT GENERIC FEATURES ARE FULFILLED WELL?
The use of the enclosed location in a large house which has been locked down is very effective in a way that makes us feel isolated and trapped. This is a clever use of setting and would be ideal for my trailer. This trailer plays predominantly into a common theme of fear of death and violence, a very heavily influenced fear of the current day. This also could tap into modern context, relating to terrorism such a 9/11, as there are no laws involved this makes the audience feel unsafe and vulnerable. Keeping the context and themes current to issues is significant in really capturing the audience and making an impact on them. I may also like to include similar context within my own trailer as it has proven to work well. Generic features i would also like to apply for myself seen here are the many close ups of people's faces, causing a claustrophobic feeling and really engaging into people's emotions. These features really work well within this trailer. Also Restricted narration, which is shown as the mother is walking along the house silently, when suddenly a masked man appears and we are presented with a chilling scream. Another interesting yet contradictory feature used was a high angle shot above the killer. Normally we would presume to see a low angle shot in order to represent his power over his victims. However this angle may have been used intentionally to connote that even though high angles are used to show vulnerability, this does not matter as we already know this person possesses much power. I would like to include this clever angle in my own trailer as it gives off quite a powerful message.
WHICH ASPECTS OF THE TRAILER DID YOU THINK WERE UNSUCCESSFUL, AND WOULD PUT OF IT'S TARGET AUDIENCE? HOW IS IT DISAPPOINTING?
The disappointing side to this trailer stems from the fact that the begging is quite slow in establishing the story line. Even though it is important for the audience to understand the narrative, you do not want them to become bored easily. As the film does contain quite a few violent themes, the beginning may not present this entirely even though the ending does and potentially put off the target audience.

Choice of Trailer Type
For our trailer we decided it would be beneficial to incorprate both styles, Scene and Highlights. We introduced our trailer through a scene of the film. This helps to establish the setting of the story making it understandable for the audeince to follow. An example of this being done in another trailer is 'Cloverfield'. The scene trailer is used well here as you are able to follow the events occuring. We decided not to continue with the scene style throughout the whole of the trailer as this may come across as boring and drag.
Once we had introduced the storyline we decided to then switch into showing the main highlights of the trailer. Quick snappy shots really grabs the viewers attention. This allowed us to build pace creating excitement. At the very end we added in a jump scare. Not only does this gain a reaction from the audience it makes our trailer more memorable and people will be eager to watch the actual film. An example of a highlights trailer can be seen in 'Paranormal Activity'. The style is used well here in order to build tension and anticipation.

WHICH CLEVER OR INTERESTING ASPECTS DO YOU THINK YOU COULD INCLUDE IN YOUR OWN TRAILER? WHAT GENERIC FEATURES ARE FULFILLED WELL?
I really enjoyed the use of dramatic music as the text appeared across the screen this is quite a powerful affect and grabs the audience’s attention. This is a useful technique as often audiences see text as boring and uninteresting. By adding the music this adds a more exciting aspect and the audience are drawn in to read it. As within all well-made horror trailers the pace increases throughout, creating your heartbeat to fasten and putting you on the edge of your seat. Much of the dialogue is also used in a clever way in order to create tension throughout the trailer.
WHICH ASPECTS OF THE TRAILER DID YOU THINK WERE UNSUCCESSFUL AND WOULD PUT OFF ITS TARGET AUDIENCE? HOW IS IT DISAPPOINTING?
For me in particular i found the trailer far too graphic and included a large amount of body horror. Even though this does give some kind of warning to the audience beforehand as to what the film will be like it may have also given away too much. This would have a negative effect on the response from the audience as if they have seen all the 'best bits' then they could become bored. The overuse of graphic material could also come across as being over the top and perhaps cheesy, much like they are trying too hard to appeal to their target audience.
WHAT WAS THE TRAILERS AVERAGE SCORE IN CLASS?
The trailers overall average score in class was 8.5/10. I feel this trailer received this score as it was very well made and grabbed your attention well. The reason perhaps that it did not gain top marks would have been because it did not cater to all of people’s tastes within class.

Cloverfield: Class Trailer Review 2
NAME OF FILM: Cloverfield YEAR RELEASED: 2008
GENRE OF TRAILER: Sci Fi/Action/Thriller/Horror MARK AFTER VIEWING: 7/10
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TRAILER?
There is a slow and upbeat beginning at the start which is at a party. It is all handheld camera and shows various people within the party talking to the camera. Suddenly all power in lost and panic sets in. They all go to the rough to see what has occurred and witness a large explosion across the city. There is some distortion on the handheld camera as people begin to flee. As they enter onto the street people are screaming and running away and the head of the Statute of Liberty comes flying towards them. The end of the trailer shows a man speaking in to the camera saying 'this is going to be the best night ever'.
A really clever aspect which i may include in my own trailer could the be the when the sound cuts out during the explosion and as people are running away. The use of handheld camera is very effective as it allows the viewer to feel as if they are experiencing the same event which are on screen and seem very realistic. I also enjoyed the use of dramatic irony at the end of the trailer as what the man says is completely contradicted but does have a lasting impact. This is a good technique i could also include. The last thing that made me really enjoy this trailer is that it builds up from slow to quick montage in an effective way in that it is quick paced and you do not get bored.
WHICH ASPECTS OF THE TRAILER DID YOU THINK WERE UNSUCCESSFUL AND WOULD PUT OFF ITS TARGET AUDIENCE? HOW IS IT DISAPPOINTING?
I do feel that within this trailer that the constant use of handheld camera does sometimes come across as too jerky and can somewhat make you feel quite dizzy and sick. Using this technique is small doses works well however in this i feel is overused. Another negative about the trailer is that although it states the film is partially in the horror genre, it does lack a lot of horror content and may divert away from this.
WHAT WAS THE TRAILERS AVERAGE SCORE IN CLASS?
The trailers average score in class was 7.5/10. I feel that it got this mark as the trailer offers the majority of the techniques you would expect and enjoy from a trailer but may miss out a few horror aspects.

Dawn of the Dead: Class Trailer Review 1
NAME OF FILM: Dawn of the Dead YEAR RELEASED: 2004
GENRE OF TRAILER: Action/Horror MARK AFTER VIEWING: 6/10
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TRAILER?
Slow montage at the start and a happy beginning, this then speeds up to a quicker montage. A woman returns home from work when she is attacked by a zombie girl who kills her boyfriend. She escapes outside to find chaos has hit the area. A group of survivors take refuge in a nearby shopping mall and shows them being tormented by the infected zombies and figuring out how to escape the building. Builds up to a quick montage of action packed scenes before showing the film title at the end of the trailer.
WHICH CLEVER OR INTERESTING ASPECTS DO YOU THINK YOU COULD INCLUDE IN YOUR OWN TRAILER? WHAT GENERIC FEATURES ARE FULFILLED WELL?
The location is set out well at the beginning and this is supported through the text on screen. I really liked the interesting effect of the jittery movement of the film and how the film seems to be melting away, it is possible i would like to include this kind of technique within my own trailer.
I feel that this trailer gives away too much of the story line, this will be disappointing for the audience as when then go to see the film they will already know what the majority of the film is about. It could also be a suggestion that the trailer is too slow for the type of film this is. It is an action packed film but the trailer may not justify this completely. It is also interesting to notice that there is no gore presented throughout the whole trailer where as in the film there is. This could put off potential viewers if they want to see gore but as it is not in the trailer then they may be less likely to want to go and see the film. Overall i do not feel that the trailer sells the film enough.
WHAT WAS THE TRAILERS AVERAGE SCORE IN CLASS?
The trailers overall average score in class was 6.5/10. I feel this was awarded because the trailer was good however improvements could be made in order to make it even better.

"Fangoria" Magazine Cover Analysis 3
Fangoria
is a US Horror fan magazine publishing since 1979. The main signifying image
within the front cover of the magazine is what we would typically presume is
the killer or villain of the presented film ‘Drag Me to Hell’. You are only
able to see the woman's head which dominates most of the page. The image also
shows direct mode of address towards the audience which conveys fear and
anguish. Iconic factors which indicate that this is in fact the villain are
features such as being dirty, old, bad dental hygiene and scabs upon her face.
It would be very untypical to be presented with a villain who was attractive in
looks. By the woman’s face being unpleasant to look at this gives the audience
some repulsion and encourages them to see the character in a negative way. As
no other kind of props or location is included within this main image this
perhaps suggests to the audience that this person is the most central within
this film and so therefor she must be focused on. Once again the most typical
colours have been used within this horror magazine and covers reds, blacks, yellows
and whites. The red colours will indicate gore, violence and danger with the darker
colours adding elements of mystery and the unknown. Text is often written in
either white or yellow to ensure the wording stands out on the page and jumps
out at the audience. Fonts can be used to suggest different connotations to the
audience. The word scars has been written in a way to suggest it has been
scratched onto the page and actually replicates the appearance of a scar. The
individual letters within the cover line of the title page have very sharp
points towards the ends, perhaps indicating knives or weapons of some sort
which adds a sense of danger. The replication used within font can been seen
once again at the bottom of the cover page in the text ‘Drag Me to Hell’ where
the font has flames coming out from the tops of each letter. Target audience
once again will be a male audience. The use of fire effects on font suggests
some action, the red and darks suggest violence and excitement, darker colours
adding mystery also. All these things are presumed to be of a male interest and
therefor will attract this audience more than it would attract a female one.
"Horrorhound" Magazine Cover Analysis 2
This
magazine contains all the typical features expected to be found within a horror
magazine cover. Once again the main image which dominates the page is that of a
villain or killer, which presents an unattractive and malformed face and body.
However this time it appears that the killer is a female and goes against the
stereotype that the bad guy is traditionally male in horror films. The victims
are shown in a smaller image below with weapons with the female looking down
over them showing her control. Behind this main image is a faded out crown of
zombies showing the audience the type of horror which is being advertised to
us. Colours of black, white and red fit in with the traditional horror colours
reinforcing violence and darkness. The colour red stands out largely and will
draw the attention of the audience to the magazine cover. This particular
magazine cover has a title which is quite bold and blocky; this is given the
illusion of a 3d effect with a background colour of red to make this appear
more on the page. Behind this further is a black splattered effect which shows
the gruesome aspect to horror. Next to the main title is a bloodied dog paw
print showing the werewolf sub-genre which can also be used within the horror
industry. The cover lines consist of catchy words and lines followed by new
horror films being released to attract the audiences. Once again I feel this
magazine is aimed at a young male audience as this the predominant audience
which the horror genre aims their products towards.
"Fangoria" Magazine Cover Analysis 1
This
is a US film magazine which specializes in the horror genre. As you are able to
see within this cover the main signifier consists of a dominant image of a
villain/killer. We are able to see the killer’s deformed facial features or
that they are wearing a mask and they also appear to be looking down, perhaps
showing their power. As the face is disfigured in some kind of way these leads
to a mystery as we are unable to see who the real person is and they have some
kind of disguise. The image is able to suggest to its audience that the type of
horror will contain some kind of gore and violence. Dominant colours used within the cover are
darker ones to support the genre and also red’s which connotes violence and
danger, the main features of horror films.
The use of the colours orange and yellow stand out from the darker
backgrounds and could also suggest energy and excitement. The font of the main
title is this yet sharp with pointed edges almost replicating knives. The text
‘H2’ contains an eroded effect showing an acidic and dangerous substance. Other
cover lines used on the cover are predominantly names of other well-known
horror films again supporting the genre in which this magazine covers.
Audiences which will be drawn towards this magazine will most probably be male
dominated as the cover contains hints of danger violence and excitement which
stereotypically would be appealing to a young male audience.
Horror Poster Analysis 3: "Eden Lake"
This is an English Horror Film which was released in 2008.
The key signifier consists of a young, attractive female victim who is hiding
from the three killers behind a tree. This suggests she is in danger and is
vulnerable. She is wearing a feminine dress which connotes her sexual appeal.
The three killers seen in this image are hidden in the background of this
poster in shadows so we are unable to see their identities. Considering this
they still have a powerful presence due to their stance within their body
language and the sense of mystery about them. The setting which can obviously
be seen within the poster is the woods, a secluded and isolated location adding
a more tense and eerie atmosphere. Many darker colours have been used within
this poster, behind the female, on the setting and on the killers. However
lighter colours have been used on the female perhaps to show her innocence and
femininity and also behind the killers at the back of the forest to maybe imply
that there is some hope for the victim. The main title is almost red stained
which draws the audience’s eyes instantly towards it and shows us that this
film will involve violence or gore. The title also is placed towards the bottom
right of the poster showing us that the image of the victim and killers are
important to notice. Obviously the title is the largest size as this is the
film title but then the sizing of the quotation at the top is also noticeable,
this will try and draw the into the film and what it is about. The font type
itself it bold and dominant on the page adding an essence of seriousness and
giving the poster overall more initial impact. The tagline within this poster
is ‘They wanted to get away from it all instead they found Eden Lake’. This
hints to the audience that the setting in which this film is set has negative
connotations and that in fact they will not be ‘getting away from it all’.
Based on the things discussed above I feel that the aimed target audience is
males, this can be seen through the use of an attractive female, dark colours
and the overall impact and dominance of the poster.
