Evil Dead: Class Trailer Review 3

NAME OF FILM: Evil Dead           YEAR RELEASED: 2013

GENRE OF TRAILER: Gory Horror      MARK AFTER VIEWING: 8/10

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TRAILER?

A group of young adults are spending time in a cabin in the woods. They stumble upon a book of dead which summons demons which torment them and leaves them fighting for survival.

WHICH CLEVER OR INTERESTING ASPECTS DO YOU THINK YOU COULD INCLUDE IN YOUR OWN TRAILER? WHAT GENERIC FEATURES ARE FULFILLED WELL?

I really enjoyed the use of dramatic music as the text appeared across the screen this is quite a powerful affect and grabs the audience’s attention. This is a useful technique as often audiences see text as boring and uninteresting. By adding the music this adds a more exciting aspect and the audience are drawn in to read it. As within all well-made horror trailers the pace increases throughout, creating your heartbeat to fasten and putting you on the edge of your seat. Much of the dialogue is also used in a clever way in order to create tension throughout the trailer.

WHICH ASPECTS OF THE TRAILER DID YOU THINK WERE UNSUCCESSFUL AND WOULD PUT OFF ITS TARGET AUDIENCE? HOW IS IT DISAPPOINTING?

For me in particular i found the trailer far too graphic and included a large amount of body horror. Even though this does give some kind of warning to the audience beforehand as to what the film will be like it may have also given away too much. This would have a negative effect on the response from the audience as if they have seen all the 'best bits' then they could become bored. The overuse of graphic material could also come across as being over the top and perhaps cheesy, much like they are trying too hard to appeal to their target audience.

WHAT WAS THE TRAILERS AVERAGE SCORE IN CLASS?

The trailers overall average score in class was 8.5/10. I feel this trailer received this score as it was very well made and grabbed your attention well. The reason perhaps that it did not gain top marks would have been because it did not cater to all of people’s tastes within class.

Cloverfield: Class Trailer Review 2

NAME OF FILM: Cloverfield            YEAR RELEASED: 2008

GENRE OF TRAILER: Sci Fi/Action/Thriller/Horror   MARK AFTER VIEWING: 7/10

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TRAILER?

There is a slow and upbeat beginning at the start which is at a party. It is all handheld camera and shows various people within the party talking to the camera. Suddenly all power in lost and panic sets in. They all go to the rough to see what has occurred and witness a large explosion across the city. There is some distortion on the handheld camera as people begin to flee. As they enter onto the street people are screaming and running away and the head of the Statute of Liberty comes flying towards them. The end of the trailer shows a man speaking in to the camera saying 'this is going to be the best night ever'.

WHICH CLEVER OR INTERESTING ASPECTS DO YOU THINK YOU COULD INCLUDE IN YOUR OWN TRAILER? WHAT GENERIC FEATURES ARE FULFILLED WELL?

A really clever aspect which i may include in my own trailer could the be the when the sound cuts out during the explosion and as people are running away. The use of handheld camera is very effective as it allows the viewer to feel as if they are experiencing the same event which are on screen and seem very realistic. I also enjoyed the use of dramatic irony at the end of the trailer as what the man says is completely contradicted but does have a lasting impact. This is a good technique i could also include. The last thing that made me really enjoy this trailer is that it builds up from slow to quick montage in an effective way in that it is quick paced and you do not get bored.

WHICH ASPECTS OF THE TRAILER DID YOU THINK WERE UNSUCCESSFUL AND WOULD PUT OFF ITS TARGET AUDIENCE? HOW IS IT DISAPPOINTING?

I do feel that within this trailer that the constant use of handheld camera does sometimes come across as too jerky and can somewhat make you feel quite dizzy and sick. Using this technique is small doses works well however in this i feel is overused. Another negative about the trailer is that although it states the film is partially in the horror genre, it does lack a lot of horror content and may divert away from this.

WHAT WAS THE TRAILERS AVERAGE SCORE IN CLASS?

The trailers average score in class was 7.5/10. I feel that it got this mark as the trailer offers the majority of the techniques you would expect and enjoy from a trailer but may miss out a few horror aspects.

Dawn of the Dead: Class Trailer Review 1

NAME OF FILM: Dawn of the Dead        YEAR RELEASED: 2004

GENRE OF TRAILER: Action/Horror        MARK AFTER VIEWING: 6/10

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TRAILER?

Slow montage at the start and a happy beginning, this then speeds up to a quicker montage. A woman returns home from work when she is attacked by a zombie girl who kills her boyfriend. She escapes outside to find chaos has hit the area. A group of survivors take refuge in a nearby shopping mall and shows them being tormented by the infected zombies and figuring out how to escape the building. Builds up to a quick montage of action packed scenes before showing the film title at the end of the trailer.

WHICH CLEVER OR INTERESTING ASPECTS DO YOU THINK YOU COULD INCLUDE IN YOUR OWN TRAILER? WHAT GENERIC FEATURES ARE FULFILLED WELL?

The location is set out well at the beginning and this is supported through the text on screen. I really liked the interesting effect of the jittery movement of the film and how the film seems to be melting away, it is possible i would like to include this kind of technique within my own trailer.

WHICH ASPECTS OF THE TRAILER DID YOU THINK WERE UNSUCCESSFUL AND WOULD PUT OFF ITS TARGET AUDIENCE? HOW IS IT DISAPPOINTING?

I feel that this trailer gives away too much of the story line, this will be disappointing for the audience as when then go to see the film they will already know what the majority of the film is about. It could also be a suggestion that the trailer is too slow for the type of film this is. It is an action packed film but the trailer may not justify this completely. It is also interesting to notice that there is no gore presented throughout the whole trailer where as in the film there is. This could put off potential viewers if they want to see gore but as it is not in the trailer then they may be less likely to want to go and see the film. Overall i do not feel that the trailer sells the film enough.

WHAT WAS THE TRAILERS AVERAGE SCORE IN CLASS?

The trailers overall average score in class was 6.5/10. I feel this was awarded because the trailer was good however improvements could be made in order to make it even better.
