Cloverfield: Class Trailer Review 2

NAME OF FILM: Cloverfield            YEAR RELEASED: 2008

GENRE OF TRAILER: Sci Fi/Action/Thriller/Horror   MARK AFTER VIEWING: 7/10

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TRAILER?

There is a slow and upbeat beginning at the start which is at a party. It is all handheld camera and shows various people within the party talking to the camera. Suddenly all power in lost and panic sets in. They all go to the rough to see what has occurred and witness a large explosion across the city. There is some distortion on the handheld camera as people begin to flee. As they enter onto the street people are screaming and running away and the head of the Statute of Liberty comes flying towards them. The end of the trailer shows a man speaking in to the camera saying 'this is going to be the best night ever'.

WHICH CLEVER OR INTERESTING ASPECTS DO YOU THINK YOU COULD INCLUDE IN YOUR OWN TRAILER? WHAT GENERIC FEATURES ARE FULFILLED WELL?

A really clever aspect which i may include in my own trailer could the be the when the sound cuts out during the explosion and as people are running away. The use of handheld camera is very effective as it allows the viewer to feel as if they are experiencing the same event which are on screen and seem very realistic. I also enjoyed the use of dramatic irony at the end of the trailer as what the man says is completely contradicted but does have a lasting impact. This is a good technique i could also include. The last thing that made me really enjoy this trailer is that it builds up from slow to quick montage in an effective way in that it is quick paced and you do not get bored.

WHICH ASPECTS OF THE TRAILER DID YOU THINK WERE UNSUCCESSFUL AND WOULD PUT OFF ITS TARGET AUDIENCE? HOW IS IT DISAPPOINTING?

I do feel that within this trailer that the constant use of handheld camera does sometimes come across as too jerky and can somewhat make you feel quite dizzy and sick. Using this technique is small doses works well however in this i feel is overused. Another negative about the trailer is that although it states the film is partially in the horror genre, it does lack a lot of horror content and may divert away from this.

WHAT WAS THE TRAILERS AVERAGE SCORE IN CLASS?

The trailers average score in class was 7.5/10. I feel that it got this mark as the trailer offers the majority of the techniques you would expect and enjoy from a trailer but may miss out a few horror aspects.
