The Purge: Solo Trailer Review 1

NAME OF FILM: The Purge                     YEAR RELEASED: 2013

GENRE OF TRAILER: Horror/Thriller          MARK AFTER VIEWING: 8/10

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TRAILER?

The setting of a happy family in an American town. Then there are scenes of violence, also known as the 'purge'. The family locks down the house but the young son allows a stranger in. The family are then threatened by masked people surrounding the house. There is then a montage of violent scenes before a jump scare at the end.

WHICH CLEVER OR INTERESTING ASPECTS DO YOU THINK YOU COULD INCLUDE IN YOUR OWN TRAILER? WHAT GENERIC FEATURES ARE FULFILLED WELL?

The use of the enclosed location in a large house which has been locked down is very effective in a way that makes us feel isolated and trapped. This is a clever use of setting and would be ideal for my trailer. This trailer plays predominantly into a common theme of fear of death and violence, a very heavily influenced fear of the current day. This also could tap into modern context, relating to terrorism such a 9/11, as there are no laws involved this makes the audience feel unsafe and vulnerable. Keeping the context and themes current to issues is significant in really capturing the audience and making an impact on them. I may also like to include similar context within my own trailer as it has proven to work well. Generic features i would also like to apply for myself seen here are the many close ups of people's faces, causing a claustrophobic feeling and really engaging into people's emotions. These features really work well within this trailer. Also Restricted narration, which is shown as the mother is walking along the house silently, when suddenly a masked man appears and we are presented with a chilling scream. Another interesting yet contradictory feature used was a high angle shot above the killer. Normally we would presume to see a low angle shot in order to represent his power over his victims. However this angle may have been used intentionally to connote that even though high angles are used to show vulnerability, this does not matter as we already know this person possesses much power. I would like to include this clever angle in my own trailer as it gives off quite a powerful message.

WHICH ASPECTS OF THE TRAILER DID YOU THINK WERE UNSUCCESSFUL, AND WOULD PUT OF IT'S TARGET AUDIENCE? HOW IS IT DISAPPOINTING?

The disappointing side to this trailer stems from the fact that the begging is quite slow in establishing the story line. Even though it is important for the audience to understand the narrative, you do not want them to become bored easily. As the film does contain quite a few violent themes, the beginning may not present this entirely even though the ending does and potentially put off the target audience.
